ArtPrize The Musical: Almost a winner

Thursday - Saturday, Oct. 1-3, 7 and 10 p.m.
Earlier this week, artist Paul Collins addressed the crowd at City Hall’s Calder Plaza, asking them to forget about the politics and just enjoy the art.

While it is possible to dispute some of his statement, what’s the point? It is rare that anyone can agree on anything these days -- well, except last year, when ArtPrize’s top two awards from the public and the curatorial side went to the same artist Anila Quayyum Agha for her work “Intersections.”

But unbeknownst to many, another artist collective, a staple on the ArtPrize circuit for the last few years now, almost won in the time-based category. To commemorate this momentous event, Super Happy Funtime Burlesque returns this year with their final installment of ArtPrize the Musical saga with a brand new show: I Almost Won at ArtPrize, the Musical!

Best of all, while there are changes to be certain, the one sure thing is that if you want to see the clean version of the show, then you will want the 7 p.m. performances. For those seeking the rowdy and fun version with an additional extra hour of burlesque, then the 10 p.m. show is when they let it all hang out.

I’ll leave it at that. Some art is best experienced with little introduction and ArtPrize the Musical is one such event. It is sure to leave even this critic with his jaw on the ground the whole night through.

Admission: 7 p.m. performance is $7, and 10 p.m. is $10.
