Blessing of the Animals: They are the real saints

Of all the things I got to see over the last week with Pope Francis, I never saw The Holy See interacting with the animals. (I get it; he was busy. But he missed California too, and they could use some rain.)

No worries, because locally you will have a chance to correct this fuzzy oversight when Pastor Ginny Mikita of Courtland-Oakfield UMC on the lovely grounds of the Dominican Center’s Francis of Assisi Sculpture Garden presents the a very special Blessing of the Animals event.

You don’t have a pet anymore? No worries if you have lost your pet. The organizers ask that you simply bring a photo of he/she in remembrance to have blessed. Even a child’s favorite stuffed animal will be blessed. In fact, if you don’t have an animal or have just been called an animal, no worries, the pastor will be blessing all who attend.

Immediately after the event, stick around to have fellowship with others as you nosh on fresh apple cider and delicious donuts. There will even be treats for the little ones.

However, if your pampered pet has a dietary issue, it is probably best to bring your own in a scent-proof container. I once dropped treats in my coat pocket before entering the Hillcrest dog park with my pooch, and let’s just say that this jacket is no longer wearable without generating looks of terror as mothers pull children close. Be smart; no bacon.

And while you are there be sure to take your furry dog, your slimy turtle, or your parrot on a nice stroll through the wooded pathways that make up the garden. Solitude of place is a big part of why so many love this park.
