Street Performer Series: Get thee to Holland

Thursday, Aug. 20, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Summer is about being impulsive and a bit reckless. Don't believe me? Then let's test how you answer my next question: On Thursday, Aug 20 (or 27th), want to get in my car and head to downtown Holland to experience a wild two hours filled with 38 live street performers and acts of all backgrounds and techniques?

If you responded immediately with a "Heck, yeah," then I am happy to report you are just the person who should be at one of the 11th annual Street Performer Series coming to a close very soon in Holland's charming downtown. For the rest of you, I'm really getting concerned about your "capacity for fun index."

"The Street Performer Series has grown in popularity immensely since it first started and it’s now one of our signature events," says Downtown Holland's Marketing Coordinator, Kara de Alvare. "We went from having I0 performance locations to now having close 40 throughout Downtown. This year, we have just shy of 100 performing artists and groups that perform on a rotating basis each week."

And if you think this is another case of artists doing things for free, then think again. Thanks to the generous series sponsorship from Gentex Corporation and Holland Christian Schools, all the artists are paid a stipend (but, as with any busking activity, tipping is encouraged, so pack some dollars to toss).

Insider tip: On August 20, Holland's Street Performance Series welcomes back to town acoustic musician and Hope College graduate Paul Van Kempen. Next week the performance group, the Knotty Bits, will be stilt-walking at the series final performance date this summer on August 27.
