The DAAC: The Phoenix rises

Opening Reception: Friday, June 19, 7 p.m. (through July 25)
It's hard to believe it's been less than two years since the Division Avenue Arts Collective was kicked out of the space they had inhabited for nearly 10 years.  (G-Sync: Right To The City) But on Friday the DAAC will return in a special five-week run at Kendall College of Art and Design's (KCAD) Fed Galleries for an incredible line-up of programming that kicks off with a fun art reception with a twist.

The DAAC, fierce advocates for a collective's ability to unleash talent to change a region through togetherness, will present an exhibition surveying the history and culture of the do-it-together (DIT) landscape they created here. In addition, the DAAC will address their present time with art events, musical performances, festivals, workshops, and public discussions. Another key part will be the chance for the public to engage on the dialogue of the DAAC's future.

"We're interested in exploring different ways to use the space to create opportunities for audiences to actively engage with the ideas and questions each project element presents," says Mike Wolf, a board member at the DAAC. "As stated in one of our 10 (mission) points, 'We believe that constructive criticism is a foundation of healthy communities.' By exploring our curiosities through creative practices we can become more aware of the world around us, which makes for more engaged and active participants in the community."

For a complete list of events from bands to special programming to SASS FEST (6/21), visit the DAAC's main site.

When I inquire about any special rules for this exhibition, Wolf reminds me of the phrase they have used from the beginning: "It's the same as how it's always been. We host event for all ages. No alcohol, drugs, and/or jerks allowed."

Admission: Reception is free
