Grand Rapids Ophthalmology eye surgeon performs innovative implant

The first implantation of the iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent in the state of Michigan was recently performed by Grand Rapids Ophthalmology cornea and glaucoma eye surgeon Dr. Marcus Muallem.

The iStent is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA. It is a treatment option for patients who have both cataracts and glaucoma. Previously, eye drops were used to treat this condition, however, the iStent is a superior option, says Dr. Muallem.

“It is hard to get patients to stick with their drops. They try it one month and then quit,” he says.

He also says other side effects, such as dry eyes and scarring, make drops less then desirable. 

Dr. Muallem says the iStent is so small the that you are unable to see or feel it after the procedure is complete.
