Grand Rapids is very lucky to have made the choice more than 40 years ago to pursue national recognized arts projects like the Calder and the Di Suvero. History is still being written to this day in projects like ArtPrize and the internationally recognized Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
The Gardens are committed to presenting innovating programs not only about plants and the environment, but equally as important the role the arts plays in our lives.
As a part of its mission to bring art to the people, the Gardens will be hosting a free walking tour on Saturday and again on Monday of our most celebrated public works of arts in downtown Grand Rapids.
The event hosted by the Gardens’ Joseph Becherer, Director of Exhibitions and Curator of Sculpture, begins at La Grande Vitesse on Vandenberg Plaza. and is This is a wonderful way to hear first hand from one of the top area scholars of the art world.
Organizers say attendees will garner greater understanding as to why Grand Rapids is called “Sculpture City” when they log about 10 blocks for the tour that should last about an hour. No word if Mary Ann Keeler will be attending, but if she is in your group be prepared for some great first hand accounts, witty repartee and plenty insights. (She is considered by many as the grand dame of public art in Grand Rapids)
