In the art community, an artist admired by his or her peers is referred to as a “painter’s painter,” and for the singer/songwriter world, there is not a better example of songwriter’s songwriter than the amazing vocal stylings of Neko Case.

For years her star burned brightly with the indie crowd, but upon the release of her sixth studio album “Middle Cyclone,” her reputation became clear as it debuted at the number three position on Billboards’ Top Ten.

Neko Case has proved over and over again throughout her diverse career that she has the vocal chops to transcend many genres as proven by her power-pop vocal work with The New Pornographers and also her guest spots with the band The Sadies.  Neko manages to keep her street cred intact like other iconic artists like Ani Defranco by eschewing major record labels as she opts for a more hands-on approach to the creative, production and management of her music.

Her storytelling genius is paired beautifully with a voice unlike any other in the last decade and conjures up memories of some of the greats of old school country.  But don’t look for her to appear on stage at the Grand Old Opry, where she is banned for life for allegedly taking off her top while performing.  While there is much Internet chatter as to why she did it (or if at all) the truth be told, it can get really hot under those stage lights.

For those who have seen her before, the concert at Meijer will be a wonderful reunion. For those who have not , be prepared to fall in love.  The magic of The Gardens outdoor venue is that every group who performs here seems to take their performances to a whole new level.  West Michigan better be prepared to be blown away by an amazing performance by Neko Case.

Neko Case, according to me, is the concert of the summer.

Admission:  $33 (If you plan to drink, remember The Gardens is a cash bar venue.)
