Locally-owned Keystone Pharmacy expands

With drive-through windows, 24-hour access and an in-store pharmacy at seemingly every big box grocer in the city, there are no lack of options for individuals looking to get their prescriptions filled.

However, for someone needing more customization of their medications due to allergies or other medical conditions, there are fewer choices. This is where Keystone Pharmacy comes in.

“We are a highly specialized niche,” explains Dave Miller, chief formulation scientist and co-owner. Miller says Keystone is one of only two pharmacies in the area that are committed to “compounding” a practice that “100 years ago, was very common, only to wane in the 1950s.”

Compounding is the process that utilizes trained pharmacists to prepare medications specifically for individual patients based on a prescription from a physician.

Examples include making an ibuprofen without cornstarch to account for a patient with corn allergies, or adjusting the delivery of a medication, such as taking an injectable and making it a nasal spray.

Because of this specialized focus, Keystone Pharmacy has been able to carve out a successful niche as evidenced by their recent additions to their store including an expansion of existing labs and the addition of a new sterile-compounding laboratory.
