Grand Rapids Public Schools officials are aiming for a July 17 grand opening for the new Alger Middle school going up at 921 Alger St.

The $12.5 million project, managed by Christman Construction and designed by URS, replaces the original school built in 1927. That building was demolished in 2005.

The new building stands four floors high with approximately 89,000 square feet of space, enough room for 25 classrooms and a spacious cafeteria that overlooks lower floors through an open stairway. The building also features an outdoor learning area that will accommodate large groups of students.

Students were temporarily housed at the Oakdale building, 944 Evergreen St., after the old school was demolished. Feeder schools for the new Alger Middle include: Alger, Brookside, Dickinson, Ken-O-Sha, Mulick, Shawnee and Sherwood.
