$700K amphitheater proposed for downtown Lowell

People remember it as the “old” Lowell showboat amphitheater, but the crumbling property could soon be a classic outdoor gathering spot for summer and winter events.

According to excerpts from the story:

LOWELL — Plans are under way to turn the deteriorating amphitheater along the Flat River into a community hub. The Downtown Development Authority approved spending up to $75,000 to demolish crumbling concrete bleachers and excavate and landscape the mothballed amphitheater, north of the Riverwalk Plaza that once served as the site of Lowell Showboat events.

Approval is contingent on securing matching funds and on DDA approval of the project’s design and bids. The DDA paid Design Plus of Grand Rapids $2,800 to come up with a plan for the site.

The company presented two, each estimated to cost up to $700,000, that include a revamped ampitheater with a stage that could serve as an ice-skating rink in winter, an overlook off East King Street, a lawn area and walkways that connect the Riverwalk with the neighborhood to the north.
