If you are feeling the void left by the now-defunct dance events of Salmagundi and Trip The Light, then Orbit, an event devoted to the art of modern dance and music, will fill that space when it returns to downtown Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood.

Grand Valley State University’s award-winning New Music Ensemble welcomes back to the Peter Martin Wege Theatre Kalamazoo’s Wellspring, Cori Terry, and GVSU dancers in the production Orbit, an original choreographed performance set to an original composition by Bill Ryan. By paring GVSU students with Wellspring, a 34-year-old modern dance company, the dancers are given a post-graduate professional experience in the producing of this event.

New Music Ensemble has performed not just locally but has a national reputation for their advancement of modern music with its roots in jazz, rock, pop and contemporary minimalism. The ensemble has performed at Bang On a Can Marathon in New York City, the College Music Society National Conference in Atlanta, New Music Detroit’s Strange Beautiful Music marathon and Carnegie Hall. All three of their recordings have earned critical acclaim, landing on numerous “best release lists” from publications including The New York Times, Washington Post, LA Weekly and Time Out Chicago.

Admission: $10 – 23. (Special student, senior, and adult tickets available.)
