Last year I stumbled upon one of the many clubs that operate in our city, the Torch Club, and was amazed at the comfortable and welcoming environment of this organization that is devoted to the expanding of our horizon through the lecture format.
This month’s topic on the Rock Star lovers from the 12th Century of France, Abelard and Heloise will be led by academic coach and fellow Torch Club member, Wendy Marty, who will bring to bring life this colorful tale of tow star crossed lovers.
And unlike most love stories this one set 900 hundred years ago has all the markings of modern tale making their story one of the most beloved and tragic of all love stories.
This compelling tale of a forbidden love between a philosopher and his student scandalized both of their families and society. And like most ancient stories, their relationship was lovingly recorded and kindled by one of the oldest of endearments, the love letter.
“Their story is explosive, dramatic, intellectual, sensual, transcultural, international, universal and finally, mythical,” says Wendy who with her husband Omar has studied these letters over the years adding a bold statement that, “All tragic love stories must be compared to the story of Abelard and Heloise and this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about this unique story.”
Wendy Marty, who has a Masters Degree in English and Education from GVSU. While currently working as an Academic Coach to Davenport University, GVSU, KISD, GRPL and other area school districts has also been the Academic Coordinator for the GRPS program, Loop after School.
