G-Sync: A Crafty BeerPrize for All

West Michigan has been racking up more and more awards as breweries seem to open on every corner. But this year, something special is brewing as Cool Brews, Hot Eats debuts. Comic Sarah Jean Anderson and Lifestyle Editor Tommy Allen hit the road to find out more.

Cool Brews, Hot Eats

“There is a church on every corner in Grand Rapids.” That old saying is in danger of extinction as more and more craft breweries are popping up a surprising rate, and often in the most surprising of locations, like Brewery Vivant setting up shop in an old funeral home.

In fact, I was driving down Wealthy Street the other day, and a new banner was proclaiming yet another neighborhood brewery was soon to open on this popular Uptown strip.

While awards like being named Beer City USA pile up and the halls continue to expand and innovate around the concept of beer, launching Feb. 18 – Mar. 3 is a brand new event from ExperienceGR that will showcase our area brews in a much bigger way.

Already, we have our popular (and sold out since 2012!) Winter Beer Festival at Fifth Third Ballpark as well as Beer Week’s nightly events leading up to the festival where taps all over the city are taken over by Michigan craft brews. But, we are also on the verge of a beer tourist invasion.

This is where ExperienceGR comes in. Building off their popular model for Restaurant Week, the new Cool Brews, Hot Eats event features more than 55 area eateries offering special food items created with Michigan beer.

To get to the bottom of this new venture, my friend and comic Sarah Jean Anderson, filmmaker Daniel Falicki (The Last Vampyre On Earth), and I reunited and set off this week on a Cool Brews, Hot Eats adventure about the city. You might be surprised at what we learn, but also who we meet along the way.
