When the leaders, which included neighborhood workers, community leaders and lawyers, behind the latest ballot drive gathered, they quickly discovered that Grand Rapids does not really have a policy about marijuana. Right away, it became clear that this open slate provided an opportunity to do something smarter similar to what  other cities have enacted.

The result of their efforts is now enshrined as a new piece of policy attached to clipboards all over the city as they attempt to get the necessary signatures to have the decriminalization of marijuana placed on the ballot.

On Friday night, the group spearheading the effort, DecriminalizeGR, will be hosting a fundraiser at The Pyramid Scheme on 4/20. (Seriously, I have never giggled as much as when I just typed that last sentence for all the irony for GR it contained.)

To think that a group of people of all ages and walks of life could come together to discuss this topic, just as other cities in the nation have done, is amazing.

Their argument is that we need a policy that is financially smarter, especially during a troubled economy period placing many local municipalities in default as they seek to find solutions.

On Friday night, people are encouraged to come out to hear some great music by the bands Spydre Murphy, The Cangue League Orchestra, Jake Stilson, Bearcat, Petals Rang the Bell, and Faux Fur and The Extra Texture, but also get more information about this exciting opportunity that, according to organizers, is going to actually transform the way people think of Grand Rapids and how we creatively problem solve.

It is also refreshing to include those 18+ and older as they can vote on this important issue, which, statically, has impacted people in a negatively way from student loan denials and refusal of employment. This law would create a smarter way in every way of dealing with this topic in our city limits and one that other’s would look upon favorably in the future as they determine what cities they want to call their home for college and after.

“We are at a financial point in the city where we must rethink certain policies that use valuable resources without delivering results. One of those policies is the enforcement of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Not only is it costing the city $2.5 million a year, but it is destroying the lives of our younger citizens,” says DecriminalizeGR’s Michael Tuffelmire. “The Pyramid Scheme has partnered with DecriminalizeGR to create this music filled event inviting people to not only have the chance to rally for a great cause in Grand Rapids, but to have some fun, too.”

Admission: $5 (18+ older show)
