The Grand Rapids Press reports that the appointment of an internationally renowned expert on strokes as medical director of the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center is a big step for establishing new treatments and research capabilities.  

According to excerpts from the story:

The appointment of an internationally renowned expert on strokes as medical director of the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center was praised as a major step in the evolution of treatment and research capabilities in West Michigan. St. Mary’s Health Care today announced the appointment Dr. Philip Gorelick, who is head of the department of neurology and rehabilitation at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago.

Gorelick’s research includes a focus on stroke risk factors, prevention and treatment. That expertise will benefit patients in West Michigan and will augment research efforts, said Dr. Dave Baumgartner, chief medical officer of Saint Mary’s.
