New Senior Neighbors of Grand Rapids location boosts accessibility to care
In an effort to facilitate more accessibility and functionality for the senior population they serve, Senior Neighbors of Grand Rapids has opened a new central office at 678 Front Street NW, Suite 205. At 5,930 square feet, the space is similar in size to the previous one at 200 Monroe Avenue, but the new office was renovated specifically to increase accessibility and safety after Senior Neighbors successfully raised $295,000 for relocation to and renovation of the new space. "We wanted to move somewhere we were more accessible because the building we were in before was difficult for older adults to navigate and get to," says Robert Barnes, president of Senior Neighbors. "At our old space, quite honestly, older adults would get to us and be out of breath and upset with us because it was difficult to find and difficult to get to use. We were able to build this new space out and make it much more functional." Senior Neighbors has five locations in West Michigan that offer adults ages 60 and older a place to have a meal, enjoy the company of friends, or take exercise or other health and wellness classes. They also offer help with home repairs and maintenance, Medicaid and Medicare counseling, and transportation. "Transportation is a big issue for a lot of older adults," Barnes says.
