New dental center increases access to urgent dental care

This month, Cherry Health opened its newest dental center in Grand Rapids’ Belknap neighborhood. However, the Belknap Commons Dental Center is different from the other Cherry Health centers, because it treats unplanned, urgent dental needs. 

The Literacy Center of West Michigan is teaching job-specific literacy at job sites to help adults improve their lives.
Grant will help bring literacy training into the workplace

Here in Kent County the Literacy Center of West Michigan is working to eliminate barriers to achieving literacy. Recently, the center was awarded a MI Impact Grant of $1.12 million dollars from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) to further their work.

Many Michigan families live below what is known as the ALICE line (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). A new grant program hopes to lift 100,000 Michigan ALICE families out of poverty in the next five years.
LEO Impact Grants will go toward helping Michigan’s struggling families

The MI Impact Grant program would distribute $15 million in awards to 10 nonprofit organizations around the state and hopefully lift 100,000 families out of working poverty over the next five years.

Transportation is one component of making Grand Rapids more livable for residents of all ages, including older ones.
