Do Good: MomsBloom and Postpartum Progress help new moms “Climb Out of the Darkness”

MomsBloom is teaming locally with national nonprofit Postpartum Progress for its annual ‘Climb Out of the Darkness’ event on June 21 at Cannonsburg Ski Area in Belmont, Mich. The free event is open to anyone who wants to help raise awareness, fight the stigma, and provide peer support to new moms with postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. Join the climb -- or enjoy a hike – and celebrate coming out of the darkness on the longest day of the year.

Do Good: Roosevelt Park Family Fiesta kicks off healthy eating and active living campaign

On Saturday, June 7 at Roosevelt Park, Kent County Health Connect and 18 community partners will kick off a healthy eating and active living pilot campaign with a free fiesta. The organizers hope that it will become a sustainable event to support physical activity, healthy eating, and smoke-free/tobacco-free parks and recreational spaces.

Do Good: ‘Women Who Care of Kent County’ make a huge impact for local nonprofits

100 women meet in one place for just one hour, and each person makes a $100 donation. A nonprofit can easily walk away with $10,000 or more in unrestricted donations or double that if they have matching funds.  

Do Good: OST partners with GRPS to take kids to Lake Michigan

Parents working more than one job or odd hours, a lack of funds, and no transportation often prevent kids from experiencing one of Michigan’s incredible natural resources. For the majority of west side Grand Rapids elementary school kids, Lake Michigan is sadly out of reach. OST has teamed up with Grand Rapids Public Schools to give fourth-graders at west side schools the opportunity to experience the big lake firsthand.

Do Good: Mama’s Boys run to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer

Jeremy Moore, 37, and John Hey, 43, met as participants in the 2012 Chamber of Commerce Leadership Grand Rapids Program and discovered both their mothers had died from pancreatic cancer. With this sad interest in common, Moore and Hey set out to see if any strides had been made in the protocol for treating pancreatic cancer.

Do Good: Putting a face on local homelessness

Homeless folks face social disadvantages that go far beyond the lack of a safe and suitable home. They have reduced access to private and public services, as well as limited access to vital necessities such as healthcare and dental services. They are often seen as unsuitable for employment, and their travel options are few.
