Old Heartside post office will become salon school

The Aveda Institute will build a new school in downtown Grand Rapids. The school purchased 138 Commerce and plans to renovate the building.

Excerpts from the story:

A salon training school has a major makeover planned for a former post office in the heart of downtown’s Heartside area.

Heart of West Michigan United Way sold the former postal building for $750,000 to Douglas J Aveda Institute, an East Lansing-based cosmetology and spa services training school.

Douglas J plans to remake the 138 Commerce Ave. SW building, which has been used as a parking area by United Way since moving to neighboring Commerce Avenue headquarters in 1999.

Douglas J, which operates schools in East Lansing and Ann Arbor, plans a full-service retail salon, classroom space and common areas for students in Grand Rapids.
