Dance Your Way to Hades: A New Cultural Exchange Dance Program
Friday nights downtown is generally a hopping off point with many area bars filling up with people looking to unwind after a hellish week in the office. What better way to dance the night away than to visit any one of the number of clubs in Grand Rapids?
This Friday night, GR’s dance card is unusually full. Local event producers Dirty Beats stacking the lineup at the Lower Level with a couple DJs from Chicago while across the river, our local beats curators, Magnate and Sub-terran[e]an, showcase their roster of artists at The Loft @ Bangers on the West Side.
But for those looking for a combination of cool married to a good trend, then Friday, you have to get to Dance Your Way to Hades to be a part of that rhythmic Detroit sound brought to the 616.
The night is stacked with three musical acts, DJ Meph, Genettic and Oddy, who have recently come off the heels of the counties fastest growing new convention uniquely devoted to anime, Youmacon — an experience-based event also of Detroit.
DJ Meph, a favorite on the Detroit scene for his creative mix of house, breaks, trance and dubstep, proved he had a sense of humor when dealing with his rising celebrity. When we discovered a foe had opened a Twitter account to mock him, he invited his followers to also follow the rival, promising to buy anyone who did follow this foe a Red Lobster biscuit.
Not only was it successful, but now he has worked this generosity into his birthday show at the Cass neighborhood’s Old Miami — a favorite with the EDM crowd.
Joining DJ Meph in his debut at the Pyramid Scheme is Genettic (formerly known as Draconum), who has been producing since 2002. He was named a runner-up in a Sarah McLachlan remix contest, but is also an adapt remixer for artists Sonaris, Protocollie and Dan Veytia, DJ Scratchin’ and Sang Dinh.
Oddy of Ann Arbor, who splits his time between DJ and audio engineer, will drop his signature mashing of electro and progressive house on the crowd and will undoubtedly drop one of the many remixes he has created for Genettic, Protocollie, Dan Veytia or former Pyramid Scheme guest, Ella Riot.
This is an 18+ show and the dance floor is sure to be packed, so dress for the warm temps sure to descend on the ‘Scheme.
Admission: $5. / 18+ Show
