Local university offers nationally unique biometric security degree

In an effort to prepare students for jobs and success in the $2 billion annual biometric security industry, Davenport University is now offering one of the nation’s first degree programs in the high tech field. Biometric security uses personal characteristics to identify people and is increasingly popular in the age of terrorism and identify theft.

Approximately 55 students now are currently enrolled in the program.

“I think with the advancements in this technology and with how security is becoming a really important issue . . . I think there’s going to be huge job growth in this field,” student Todd Fortier told the Richmond Times Dispatch.

“Biometrics is the wave of the future. You’re seeing fingerprint scanners or readers on every device, from your laptops to your door entry,” added Scott Meuser, a systems specialist for Detroit-based security firm.
