The trendy European furniture of EQ3 will soon make its mark on the eclectic Creston business district. The Huizen Group, owners of EQ3, will move the store into a 3,500-square-foot loft space in the neighborhood. The space is located above another of their stores, Stonesthrow, a contemporary furniture showroom at 1428 Plainfield.
Moving EQ3 from its current 130 Ionia SE address wasn’t an easy decision, but Stonesthrow Manager Todd Huizen says the company expects the store to get more foot traffic in the new location.
“The current location is a great area, but there’s not much retail down there,” Huizen says. “They’re not getting the traffic they’ll get up here, and our two stores will complement each other well.”
Although the store will reduce its square footage by nearly half, Huizen says the scaled-down European style allows plenty of room for intriguing furniture displays. The company offers a full line: sofas, dining, home office, entertainment centers, and accessories.
“We have a big crossover of customers,” Huizen adds. “But, part of the reason for the move is that some of the people who shopped at EQ3 didn’t know about Stonesthrow, and vice versa.”
The Plainfield location has been a furniture store since 1916. Huizen’s family has owned it 25 years, since purchasing the space from the previous occupant, Jerry’s Furniture.
