Health Hill's children's hospital boosts plans by $60M

The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital project on Michigan Street's Health Hill began as a $190 million endeavor. That investment has now climbed to $250 million after Spectrum Health decided not to set aside parts of the project for future development, but rather to build everything all at once.

"We'll get the most comprehensive children's hospital up front," says Tom Hanley, spokesperson for the children's hospital.

Additions to the development plan include a complete pediatric radiology and diagnostic imaging unit, and a pediatric cardiac catheterization unit.

Expansions to the neonatal unit include 40 private rooms and a connection between the hospital's third floor and that of neighboring Butterworth Hospital, which will combine the existing neonatal unit with the new one.

Hanley says the 14-story, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified facility will be a unique destination for children's healthcare featuring a pediatric-only ER and surgery rooms, as well as -private patient rooms where parents can room-in so the child feels comfortable and safe.

"Kids come in all shapes and sizes," Hanley says. "Therefore a children's hospital needs to be equipped for that. For example, having 12 different sizes of blood pressure cuffs that fit kids from a one-pound baby to a 200-pound high school athlete."

To-date, the hospital has raised $94 million of its $100 million capital fund.
