On Friday, December 1, the Creston Neighborhood Association and Design + will bring the Creston community together to participate in a design charrette for the redevelopment of the Plainfield business corridor between Leonard and Sweet Streets.
“We’ve been working on a number of angles through the neighborhood association and the business association on things from beautification to getting buildings that are underutilized into highest and best use,” said Paul Haan, former director of the Creston Neighborhood Association and a 10-year resident.
“Some of the buildings are in disrepair,” he added. “Very few are abandoned; most of them are under local ownership. Now it’s about helping those folks get development plans in place.”
Part of the charrette’s purpose will be to define the epicenter of the neighborhood, which Haan says is most likely the area near the former Creston Library.
“How do we give that area the extra pizzazz and pop we need to make this the urban space people are looking for,” Haan asked. “Rather than people doing it one by one, how do we do it together?”
Charrette organizers hope to have participation from high school students, college students, new residents, and established residents.
The meeting will be held from 11:30 to 1:30 at the Plainfield United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 214 Spencer NE. Lunch will be provided. To RSVP or make an inquiry, call the Creston Neighborhood Association at 454-7900.
