Mercy General Health Partners in Muskegon will name its new cancer center The Johnson Family Cancer Care Center in appreciation of a major gift from the Paul C. Johnson Foundation and the Charles E. and Patricia B. Johnson family. The gift is in memory of Anne L. and Paul C. Johnson.
By bringing together Mercy General's oncology services, Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan, and new radiation therapy services, the hospital will create the only comprehensive cancer care center in the region. The idea behind the center is based on feedback gathered from cancer patient focus groups from Mercy General Health Partners.
"This is the first time we’ve had the opportunity to respond with patient-driven services," says Kelly Kurburski, marketing director for Mercy General. "Our cancer patients really wanted to stay in Mercy General Health Partners [for all their treatments], but we’d have to refer them to Grand Rapids, Holland, or another hospital in Muskegon because we didn’t have the radiation therapy services."
The cancer care center will bring a variety of patient services under one roof, including: radiation, chemotherapy, medical social work, pastoral care, a new laboratory, linear accelerator, patient and family counseling, wellness options, and nutritional support groups.
The center will be located in an existing 13,550-square-foot building at 1440 East Sherman Boulevard on the Mercy General campus. A proposed addition will expand the new cancer center to some 19,000 square feet. The building is currently occupied by Orthopaedic Associates of Muskegon, who will relocate to a new ambulatory surgery center when it's completed in 2008.
