“Rockin’ with the Rockettes” kicks off new downtown entertainment collaborative

By: Deborah Johnson Wood

Tuesday night may be your only chance to kick up your heels in a chorus line with the famous Radio City Rockettes. That’s when four members of the Rockettes dance troupe will appear at Rosa Parks Circle to teach the community the secrets of their high kicking prowess as a free “kick off” of the Downtown Alliance's new outdoor entertainment initiative, let’s go. out.

Let’s go. out. is a new Downtown Alliance initiative designed to create a citizen-led roster of downtown entertainment possibilities that would appeal to young single professionals and students, with hopes to make Rosa Parks Circle the epicenter of outdoor entertainment in the city.

Other cities maximize their green spaces, markets, waterfronts, and public squares to set them apart as economically competitive, environmentally friendly and culturally rich cities. So to that end, a committee of 29 downtown stakeholders convened by the Downtown Alliance, the Downtown Development Authority and the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention Arena Authority worked this summer to determine community interest and develop a strategy for bringing affordable, enjoyable and culturally diverse public entertainment to Center City.

The alliance will unveil the fruit of those efforts this Tuesday, September 9 at 6 p.m., followed by the dance session with the Rockettes and the park's regular Tuesday night gathering of the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society Dance featuring the Beltline Big Band.
