GR’s $5M Uptown Village cuts the ribbon

After nearly a year of construction, Lighthouse Communities will celebrate the completion of its $5 million Uptown Village with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 AM on August 3. This marks the end of phase 2 for a project that replaces a city block of dilapidated houses and junk cars with affordable-rate townhomes and apartments, and 6,000 square feet of commercial space.

The 18 apartments occupy the top two floors of the three-story building, over the retail space.

“We brought the building right up to the sidewalk,” says Chuck Hoyt, spokesperson for Lighthouse. “The people living there will have a real urban feel, not isolated from the neighborhood spaces.”

Hoyt cites a public transportation stop across the street, the walkability of the retail area, and other revitalization efforts, such as the renovation of the Meanwhile Bar across the street, as aspects of the hip urban community Lighthouse envisioned.

The two- and three-bedroom apartments have loft-style open floor plans, large windows, and 12-foot ceilings. Historic finishes, like wood-frame windows and brick and faux stucco facades, ensure the building is in keeping with the nearby historic architecture.

Each retail bay offers about 1,000 square feet of space along a busy street, storefront windows, and energy-efficient construction.

“Personally I’d like to see a gym go in there,” Hoyt says. “A small coffee shop would be great with the building being right up on the sidewalk like it is.”

The six townhomes along Sigsbee SE opened earlier this year, and all but one are leased.
