In a world where cancer is increasingly more prevalent, Hope Lodge exists to offer its namesake. Grand Rapids' Hope Lodge is the first in Michigan. And since there are only 25 of these beautiful dwellings across the United States, we are quite fortunate to have one in our neighborhood.
What is the Hope Lodge? It’s a home-away-from-home for those who come to the Mecca of medicine we call downtown. The American Cancer Society builds these facilities to take the financial burden of cancer treatment off of the patient, while providing them an oasis to heal. It offers travel, meals, lodging and various distraction activities.
Approximately 3,800 patients receive treatment at Grand Rapids-based hospitals each year. Of those, one in every four travels from outside the area for treatment, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Hope Lodge relies heavily on volunteers to assist with the services provided to the patients who reside there and their families. A small staff provides the necessary management, but dozens of others make its daily operations feasible.
"I enjoy being able to help get people to their treatments, socialize with them a little bit and have a sympathetic ear if someone is so inclined to share what is going on,” explains Brian Patterson, a volunteer driver.
It’s community-minded souls like Brian that keep Hope Lodge available to the countless others who need the Hope Lodge for their success in overcoming cancer. Here’s where you can help.
The two most needed volunteer-positions are receptionists and drivers. However, volunteer opportunities at Hope Lodge are varied and flexible, and serve many needs. To find and schedule a volunteer opportunity, please call the Hope Lodge at 616.551.4000.
Be a do-gooder. Do good at our very own Hope Lodge.
