100 Strong and Counting

A local giving circle is celebrating success. West Michigan 100 Strong donated $34,000 to worthy charities in their inaugural year. The group is opening its doors and welcoming new members to help them pursue their mission of making an impact on local nonprofit organizations through awareness and funds.

The plan is simple.

Members of the giving circle donate $100 at each of the four meetings held throughout the year. Three charities make their case to the group at each meeting, and the members vote as to who should receive the majority of the funding. The two organizations not chosen receive $1,000 each.

It really is that easy.

“Meetings are short, kept to just one hour so as not to intrude on busy schedules,” says Kathy Vogelsang, who formed the group in 2011 with Gerilyn May and Cindy DeWald.  “Of course, not everyone will be able to attend every meeting and that’s okay -- just don’t forget to send the check. But the meetings are truly uplifting; it’s a chance for members and charities to learn more about each other and create a unique fellowship.”

The dates have already been scheduled for 2012 and a goal of $40,000 has been set for the year.
• Tuesday, March 20 - Children’s charities
• Wednesday, June 20 - Educational charities
• Tuesday, September 11 - Seniors' charities
• Wednesday, December 5 - Physical and Mental Health charities
