It’s November; the holidays are upon us. We will be scratching our heads and wondering what to buy for that family member who has everything, walking around store after store looking for a gift that is thoughtful and meaningful.
What if you are a child living in a foster home or even residential care during this celebratory time? This is the case for nearly 1,000 children at DA Blodgett – St. John’s Home. The holidays are a stressful time of year for anyone. However, can you imagine what it would be like for the children under the care of an agency?
That is why DA Blodgett - St. John’s Home becomes Santa’s workshop. The Christmas Match program was designed to bring a present to all of the kids who may not otherwise be receiving a gift this holiday season. Children are matched up with donors who will then purchase a present for them. It really is that easy.
“One of the most rewarding tasks of my job is talking to the people who participate in our Christmas Match program,” says the organization’s Executive Assistant Shelly Friend. “The children and families we serve are very blessed to be living in a community of such caring and generous people.”
Friend has the overwhelming task of ensuring that every child the agency works with has a present on Christmas morning. She supplies generous community members with a child’s first name, gender, age, clothing sizes and a list of needs, interests and wants.
Here’s the do-gooder part. You can help.
If you are interested in helping make a child or family’s Christmas special this year, or for more information about D. A. Blodgett - St. John’s Christmas Match Program, please contact Shelly Friend at (616) 774-4613 or email her at

If that is not your style, here are some other ways in which you can get involved with the organization. Don’t be a Grinch. Help a child in need.
