Energy alternatives mean business

Business owners say that energy bills are harder to pay than wages and worker’s comp. Can alternative energy sources make businesses more profitable, and, if so, how?

According to excerpts from the story:

Everyone is in agreement that independence from Middle Eastern oil would be good thing, and preserving this planet for our grandchildren the honorable path to take. But the questions remain: Which path do we take? What’s western Michigan’s role? And how can we make alternative energy financially beneficial for businesses that take those investment risks?

Business Review called together a group of experts in the energy field to discuss what the choices are and what the future might be for alternative energy and its production in this region.

They met last month in Grand Rapids. In attendance were:

  • Roger Betz, CFO of Michigan Biodiesel and Michigan State University Extension Service district farm management agent
  • Richard Leist, senior vice president for investments and branch manager of Oppenheimer and Co. Inc.
  • Stephen Stubleski, principal rate analyst for the pricing rates department of Consumers Energy
  • Rich Vander Veen, president of Mackinaw Power.

Leading the discussion was Business Review associate editor Mark Fellows, with assistance from associate editor B. Candace Beeke, who covers energy, and editor Michael Chevy Castranova.
