When a person experiences writer's block, he or she can sometimes break on through to the other side with a change of scenery.
But rather than take a trip to an exotic locale, I discovered this weekend that I didn't have to step any further than downtown Grand Rapids to get inspired.
Turns out this past weekend, I wasn't the only one having my neural cells firing on all cylinders.
The ambitious and amazing Land of Riches exhibit at the old Grand Rapids Public Museum was the place to be on Friday night, as guests mingled with a dazzling display of art that referenced the museum's massive collection, some of which had been in storage for decades.
The patrons reconnected not just with each other, but also with a past that they thought they had forgotten.
Judging by the warm and personal comments I heard, the exhibit
provided a chance to reflect on how far we have come as a community. (Yes, I made 2 trips.)
The Land of Riches show proved to me that we still have a place in our present for those who came before us.
This is when the wall began to come down for me. Art has the power to take us places, to push us down a road we had no idea still existed inside of us.
And metro Grand Rapids is rich with places to be explored and discovered through dialogue with each other. To do a bit of your own exploration, visit the Land of Riches exhibit Thursdays, April 22, 29 and May 13 from 2 - 8 PM. Free admission, and donations accepted.
And just like that my creative block was over….and now, so is my editorial for this week.
Get out and see your city for all it has to offer this week. Let the conversation begin in you.
The Future Needs All of Us (to explore our past.)
