There are only three things in life we can count on: death, taxes and that nearly 98% of us who proclaim a New Year’s resolution will ultimately fail.
So for the vast majority of us, it begs the question why we would even consider making a resolution when the odds are so great that we will break it anyway.
With only two weeks left in the year, we are almost like a group of students who haven't studied for the math test and are praying in vain for a snow day -- as if classes could be canceled for the remainder of the school year and we would automatically graduate to the next grade without ever having to do long division.
No, sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns, and I am willing to yet again saddle up to make a New Year's resolution. But in 2009, I hope to join that exclusive 2% club by cheating a bit in my attempt to hit 100% success. For one thing, I'm only going to make one New Year's resolution publicly in this column. For another, it's something that I like and want to do anyway.
Hey, who says New Year's resolutions have to be plentiful and painful?
My New Year's resolution is to act more proactively in my life by nudging social media to greater heights in 2010. Next year I hope to look for every opportunity that I can to educate myself and anyone else interested in how to utilize this fundamental change (and the ones yet to emerge) in how we communicate. Metro Grand Rapids is pretty good at adopting a new dance and adapting it to our area -- once it learns the steps. So strike up the band, and let's tango to a new tune say, like Twitter!
My resolution may sound a bit vague, but honestly, so is every journey into the unknown waters of other worlds yet to be discovered. The key to adopting is to just get on the boat and launch the expedition. (and you thought I’d say, “Just Do It” in the hopes Nike would send me shoes. I’m a Puma Man!)
The staff at Rapid Growth will be away for a couple weeks as we are on hiatus but we hope you will enjoy this time traditionally spent with family and friends. I hope I have made you feel at home in our town as you have made me this past year.
See you in 2010!
Choose local…and often.
