I find it strange that on the weekend we will celebrate rotting flesh, bloody messes running amuck and the ghoulish behavior of kids and adults alike that I would use this occasion to highlight the need for greater human contact in our community
But such as it is, again, we find ourselves at the crossroads of the dead and undead. Yes, a lot is made of Thanksgiving and Christmas and it was never more clear than if you were one of the unsuspecting few who happened to stumble on the continuous play of Christmas music last weekend on WLHT. (FYI: It’s too soon, Barnaby & Friends)
But I would kick Santa to the curb and say that the true community-building holiday celebration that trumps them all is Halloween – a time where our creativity can really shine without the aid of electricity, red velvet and popcorn garland.
This Halloween the region has become especially exciting this year with the advent of so many high profile events that literally they are stacked on top of each other like a…well…corpse in a shallow grave.
While many events promise records numbers, no one this week is more concerned than Rob Bliss who hopes the return of Zombie Walk 2 will place Grand Rapids back in the Guinness World Book of Records. The secret ingredient to his events as with any other event this weekend is our innate desire for real human contact.
So pardon my ghoulish manner, but if your only contribution to this festive time of the year is sitting by the door at home handing out candy over the weekend, then you will miss one of the biggest entertainment weekends of the year.
Add some sugar and spice to your life, get out and enjoy the biggest holiday of the season.
Choose local…and often.
