G-Sync: Table to Farm (Video)

Summer is a time when many of us head from the steamy hot concrete to one of the many sandy shores of West Michigan’s lakes for some much needed rest and relaxation as we dive mindlessly into the pages of novels that ask little of us except to simply turn the page.

But for local comic and downtown resident Sarah Jean Anderson, whether it was a legitimate desire or a flashback to summer school sessions, she expressed across the table one night of her burning desire to add some mad skills to her long list of accomplishments: learn to milk a cow.

So in the spirit of summer, a period of time when we don’t take things too seriously, and in a city where nearly every new restaurant boasts some unique take on farm-to-table, we decided to excuse ourselves from the table and head back down on the farm to check in and see first hand what one farm has to offer in our region.

And of course, all of my Slow Food friends agreed that if you are going to visit a working farm and learn to milk a cow, you had to visit Lubbers Farm -- a place known for the on-site Little Rooster Bread Company, a farm store with meat and eggs but most famously, their Cowslip Creamery where they produce small batch semi-firm Brighid and a historically-rich Phocas cheese.

And while Lubbers Farm is a serious farm situated on the banks of the Grand River just a few minutes' drive from the center city, Sarah and I really enjoyed our time with Karen and Jeff Lubbers. We hope our trip to the farm on a very hot summer morning infuses some much-needed laughter into a very serious topic.

Editor’s Note: Thank you to Lubbers Farm and all the animals  on the land (including chickendog The Dude) who allowed us the opportunity to see first hand that kind farming is important and hard work but also that this natural space can provide plenty of room for laughter as well.  We really enjoyed spending time down on the farm.
