Saugatuck-Douglas targets $3.5M in federal stimulus funds

Organizations with shovel-ready revitalization plan in place could be first in line for any monies proffered through a proposed federal economic stimulus plan. One historic lakeshore community is determined to be one of those ready with a plan for millions in infrastructure improvements.

Douglas City Council, eyeing a hoped-for $2.5 million to $3.5 million in Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Bill funds, hired Fleis & VandenBrink Engineering Monday for $78,500 to provide phase one of what firm engineer Steve Bishop called a shovel-ready city plan.

City staff for the last year plus has discussed street improvements, water main replacement and storm drainage upgrades, but refrained from starting work until they could be prioritized in a capital improvements plan along with other city needs.

The federal stimulus bill may provide opportunity for funding discussed needs, but would require prompt action presenting the fed a plan, Bishop said.
