Engineering students from Grand Valley State University and local builders recently broke ground on a project to develop one of the most energy efficiency homes in the nation.

According to excerpts from the story:

Grand Valley State University, Westown Jubilee Housing, and Heartland Builders LLC are joining together in the heart of Grand Rapids’ west side to construct one of the first houses to qualify for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – for Homes (LEED-H) ratings system.

Using insulated concrete forms, basement walls will be 11 inches thick with all above grade walls nine inches thick. The walls will include foam, concrete and rebar.

“Nothing gets through that — bugs, rodents. It doesn’t rot, it’s very sold, very heavy and thermally it is a very resistant wall. This will save tremendously on heat costs,” Fleischmann told MiBiz.
