Sometimes the best stories are those that we cannot access or write about but we know happen. So with a most respectable nod and a desire to keep my own head low, please consider this (wonderful) event that allows us unfiltered access to some of the brightest cyber-focused minds on the planet.

This is going to be a geek fest of a treat in our city. If you, like me, have been noticing cyber-rights issues emerging from every angle, this is a great place to start your education on this topic.

The two-day event will include keynote speakers Kellman Meghu of The Hitch Hikers Guide to Information Security (Saturday) and Friday’s most anticipated Chris Roberts, whose topic will be determined by the number of federal agents present in the audience. (And he will know, which makes these speaker events thrilling to attend.)

Hacker conventions like this one, presented by the Midwest InfoSec community, give us a chance locally to look into the culture and digital landscape of this growing field.

The smallish (under 1,000 people) event promises to be informative but fun, as hackers of all colors and hats will be gathering to engage with like-minded people. This is open to all but a word of caution: this is not the weekend to leave your access via any wifi or blue tooth device open. As one cyber security advisor reminded me in a meeting just this week when talking about this event, “If I can find your computer, I will get in and control it.” Time to switch off in 3, 2, 1……
