New Holland Brewery to explore wood aged beers with the addition of new head brewer

New Holland Brewing Co. announced that Steve Berthel has joined the New Holland team as Head Pub Brewer and will oversee the brewing of specialty beers.

Berthel is a long time collaborator with New Holland and was one of the co-owners of The Livery, a craft brewery in Benton Harbor. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Brewers Guild.

According to Brett VanderKamp, New Holland president, the addition of Berthel to the New Holland family will have significant impact on their organization and will also delight craft beer enthusiasts. "Adding Bert to our team will allow us to take it one step further. One of the things we are exploring is the wood aging of beers. We've been playing around this, but now we can provide the platform and the audience for Bert to showcase his talents."

VanderKamp says the process of wood aging beers has many benefits, one of which is creating a lower alcohol beer that has a very interesting taste. In other words, a light beer that tastes good.

With just under 150 employees, New Holland Brewing Co. sells its beer and spirits across a growing region. In 2012, their  production facility underwent substantial development including the tripling of the brewing capacity through outdoor fermentation.
