Varsity News Network looking for blue chip recruits

It is hard to imagine an industry that has more memorable narratives and story arcs than the world of sports. "Lin-sanity." "It's a Cinderella story!" "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!" "Down goes Frazier. Down goes Frazier."

For Ryan Vaughn, co-founder of Varsity News Network (VNN), it is the thousands of untold story lines about high school athletes that inspired him to begin his first venture, West Michigan All-Star. This same passion is now driving the growth of VNN, an online sports information system that helps schools celebrate student athletes while providing an experiential learning opportunity for their media students.

VNN, a 2011 Momentum business, just received a round of fundraising from private investors and local angel networks that allows Vaughn and his co-founder to hire tech and sales staff for their venture.

Vaughn says the VNN culture is a blend of two seemingly disparate interests. "We marry sports and technology," he says. "Everyone that works for us is a huge sports fan. Everyone is involved in tech startups, so we end up having a certain amount of nerdiness."
