Nationally syndicated columnist LZ Granderson recently wrote an article entitled
"The fastest-growing job in America," which highlighted the job trend towards "hustling" and self-employment by juggling multiple gigs
For Mike Yoder, a "hustler-in-the-new-economy," consultant, founder/manager of
LinkedUp Grand Rapids, this trend keeps him busy.
"A big part of my time is that I own and manage LinkedUp Grand Rapids," says Yoder, who adds that the organization is designed to help individuals build and leverage professional networks, both online and offline.
Using the social networking power of LinkedIn, Yoder helps organize a series of networking events at various locations in West Michigan geared towards building trusted business relationships, ultimately leading to increased sales and job opportunities.
Through his consulting work, he also helps train individuals on how to build effective profiles online that lead to business and career growth. With its massive database, Yoder feels that LinkedIn is an incredible, but under-utilized tool, emphasizing "it's not just to get jobs, but to build business and generate income."
What is the biggest challenge of being part of this new economy? "From my own perspective, it is how to strike the balance between generating new business and then fulfilling that business. When do you get that intern? When do you hire the extra person? When should I pay someone else to do it? At some point, if your business is growing, you need to make these decisions."
