Neighborhood market producing healthy results

Since opening in the summer of 2011, you could say that Nourish Organic Market is off to a "healthy start."

Besides providing organic foods, sourced from Michigan suppliers, the market has created job opportunities, now sporting a team of five full- and part-time staff.

For Jake Heaton, manager, the first year has been extremely gratifying and slightly surprising. "We have a lot help from the community that lives in the area. At first we thought the store might be destination, but most of the clientele is local."

Heaton and team are already thinking about the future. "We always wanted to be a full-service store," he says, adding that might mean reviewing where and when they source their products, especially when Michigan grown products are not in season. Heaton is also considering the need for more space. "We will stay open minded, but want to be true to our values. I love the location, but when we added a freezer and coolers, I realized what it means to be small neighborhood store! Eventually we may want to have a bigger spot."
