Since 2009,
Applied Imaging has been on an upward sales and jobs addition trajectory, and it does not look like that will end any time soon. According to John Lowery, president, his firm has added 38 jobs in that time frame and is on track to add another 10 positions by the end of 2012.
Lowery, Michigan's 2012 Small Business Person of the Year, attributes the firm's success to several factors. "We made key, strategic acquisitions, including adding another company on the other side of the state. We also invested in enterprise management software. We go in and help our clients lower costs through technology and show them how to print less."
Another factor for Applied Imaging's success is finding the right person for the job, a high priority for Lowery. "The biggest thing for us is that we are hiring for a higher level of sociability now," he says. Lowery says that in the past, a service technician's role was to be relatively invisible when on site. But now, Applied Imaging wants this individual to be visible and actively engaged -- solving problems, answering questions and building relationships with the clients.
