New York City trade show launches local stationery design firm to next phase

"Inspired" is how Abbey Fowler described her experience at the National Stationery in New York City last month.

Fowler, founder of Syd Design -- a specialty design business that focuses on wedding invitations and greeting cards -- just returned from the show. Here, she had her own booth for the first time versus attending as a representative of firms where she worked in the same industry in the past.

Besides the inspiration, Fowler said the feedback on her designs was very positive. "Many people said my designs were fresh and unique," Fowlers says.

Recalling her previous work in the publishing industry where she attended many trade shows, Fowler she fell in love with the stationery business and decided to set out on her own in 2008 with Syd Design. She now has customers all over the United States.

As for the name, she laughs and says she named it partly after a cat she had once, but now is in the process of rebranding her business to better position her firm for growth.

Fowler indicates she is in the process of adding new lines of products and channels of distribution, with a focus on wholesale accounts with a national scope.
