Cherry Street Health Services plans Wyoming location and 16 new healthcare jobs

Cherry Street Health Services has announced plans to open a healthcare center in Wyoming that will provide medical and dental services for lower-income residents in the area. And while the opening date is still in limbo, the organization is busy planning to add 16 healthcare positions to staff the center.

Dubbed The Wyoming Community Health Center, the new location will occupy the former Classic Chevrolet building on Burlingame Avenue between 28th St. SE and Prairie St. SE. The planned facility received a $566,667 annual grant through the federal Affordable Care Act funding. Cherry Street Health Services is one of six Michigan organizations to receive funding.

"There is a shortage of providers for the patients in that area, primarily for the Hispanic population," says Bob Lackey, director of human resources. "We're getting ready to hire for this site and we want to look at people who can serve Spanish-, English- and Vietnamese-speaking patients."

Lackey says he's looking for potential candidates who not only speak the patient's language, but who have an understanding of the cultures.

Anticipated job positions include a family practice doctor, patient registration specialists, medical assistants, a dentist, dental assistants and hygienists, and eventually a physician's assistant and a nurse practitioner, Lackey says.

"We need to get staff in place as soon as we can for training and orientation to our programs," Lackey says.
