Goldfish Swim School Grand Rapids, an independently owned and operated franchise, recently opened its doors at 28th and Thornhills. Its four owners hope to provide an alternative way for children to learn to swim.
According to co-owner Matt Watson, the school has a primary focus on children as young as four months and up to 12 years old. "The four of us have a passion for swimming [and] feel we have a way to do swim lessons better," he says of his team.
Watson cites their commitment to weekly lessons throughout the year as a key. "We do one lesson a week and are open all year. Children learn better over a long year. To start taking lessons and then stop results in a loss of skills."
Sarah Alberts, co-owner, also adds that the smaller class sizes -- a typical ratio of four to one -- and fun atmosphere contribute to a better learning environment. "We help develop a comfortable relationship with water that leads to a better relationship with water," she says. "It is a happy environment [with] a friendly vibe when you walk into the facility."
Watson says there will be a minimum of 25 jobs created and with a potential of up to 40-50 jobs when demand grows, a projection based on other Goldfish Swim Schools.
Families interested in lessons may to sign up over the phone by calling 616-422-5586 or in person at the facility. There is a grand opening celebration August 30 from 4-7 p.m. featuring a free, open swim.
