Patrick Placzkowski and Anthony Thompson, Ed.D., are the two newest additions to
Van Andel Institute (VAI), a disease research and science education nonprofit.
Placzkowski joins the organization as Director of Development for
Van Andel Research Institute (VARI). Thompson is coming on board as Director of Development for
Van Andel Education Institute (VAEI). Both new hires point to the VAI and West Michigan as powerful attractors in their decision to relocate to the region.
As a native of Wisconsin, Placzkowski is comfortable with the "familiar Midwestern feel" of Grand Rapids. However, it is the work, reputation, and philosophy of the VAI that cemented the deal to accept the position in development at VAI. "It is one of the most impressive research institutes I have been to. I have worked in cancer research in Washington D.C., but what makes this unique is that the research is happening at the Institute. In previous organizations, we collected funds then distributed funds. Coming here, there is no distance between the money and the science."
Thompson, with years of experience in higher education, was attracted to the business ecosystem and opportunity to advance educational initiatives at VAEI. "When I came out for my first visit, what struck me was the combination of healthcare, education, and art in the area, and how Grand Rapids had those elements supported by government and private industry." Thompson says he is excited to be supporting the VAEI by helping to spread "scientific and inquiry-based education far and wide."
