Kim Bode, founder of
834 Design & Marketing, has developed an internship program that supports both her alma mater, Grand Valley State University, and reaffirms her belief that the best way to prepare students for a career in public relations, design, and event planning is applied experience. "We take on six interns each semester who have a focus on public relations, graphic design, marketing, or hospitality and tourism management," Bode says. "It has been a huge success, and we are fielding a ton of requests for the winter semester."
To help support the program, Bode has hired Adrienne Wallace as a project manager. Wallace, who is an adjunct professor of communications and public relations at GVSU, will be responsible for putting the processes in place to coordinate the internship experience. Wallace will also be responsible for a great deal of project work with 834 Design's clients.
An additional new hire for the firm is Derek DeVries, who has been brought on as a contractor to help manage the influx new businesses looking for focused efforts on social media strategy and search engine optimization.
With the growth of the internship program and the new hires, Bode has recently had to move her firm to a new, larger space on the west side of Grand Rapids.
