10th annual Tech Trends conference eyes technology of the future

By: Deborah Johnson Wood

When Tech Trends, an annual look at future technologies, started 10 years ago it drew some 15 participants to a presentation in a small room. This year, organizers expect the event will draw some 300 attendees and they moved the venue to DeVos Place.

"Technology touches every job and every profession," says Keith Brophy of NuSoft Solutions. Brophy is the presenter for the conference. "Our goal is to talk about technology predictions in a fun style so everyone kind of sinks their teeth into them."

Brophy will focus on trends, impacts and social implications of web technology, sophisticated mobile device technology, pervasive information display technology, driverless cars, home health care telemedicine and robotics, and West Michigan's preparedness to supply in-demand technologists who can design, create, deploy and install software systems.

"High-end technology skills are in very high demand because all types of businesses are embracing technologies at new levels," Brophy says. "West Michigan is still evolving our supply chain. There's a huge demand for people with 15 or 20 years' experience, that's where the biggest shortage is. Many of those people have moved out of the state because other areas of the country have more booming businesses than we currently have in Michigan."

Brophy adds that those positions for experienced systems workers are lucrative, paying between $60,000 and $100,000.

The conference runs from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20. An open reception will be held on the fourth floor of The B.O.B. immediately following the event.
