VAI researchers believe discovery can stop spread of cancer

Current cancer treatments cannot stop the spread of the disease throughout the body. But a recent discovery by Van Andel Institute scientists may change all that.

A study published in Current Biology says that researchers found a protein called DIP that changes how cells move. That movement allows tumors to develop away from the original cancer.

"Cancer patients most often die not from the original tumor, but from those that spread to other organs," Art Alberts, VAI senior scientific investigator. told the Grand Rapids Press.

DIP allows cancer cells to change shape and possibly move through the body.
